Kids After School: Shots with JCR Ministries
When Dave and Becky Darling started JCR Ministries about a year ago, they quickly ran out of space in their home and moved their after school events to a nearby park in El Cajon, CA. They soon had over 80 kids showing up.
The children came from neighborhoods all around the park to play, have dinner, do planned activities, win prizes, and connect.
Don't let the beautiful faces fool you. These wonderful kids come from very difficult circumstances and home situations. Drug use, gang activity, and poverty are ways of life in the inner city.
It's dinner time for the kids at Wells Park, El Cajon, CA.
The children are of mixed races and nationalities, but this is the common denominator.
JCR gathered their own school supplies for the children this fall in time for school. They collected over 80 backpacks filled with school supplies for the kids.
Kids with school supplies are a beautiful thing. It means they have a fighting chance at the outset to be competitive.
It also means that they know someone cared enough to give them that chance.
Here's JCR's supply line at the park.
Kids are kids. Whether in Mexico, here in the U.S. or anywhere in the world, the children are so easily pleased and excited as they pore over their packs.
Proud school supply owners.
All ages welcome here.
Time out to eat.
Time out to just be.
Activities hold the kids' interest.
Well, most kids' interest.
And here is the heart of JCR Ministries. Dave and Becky Darling started and have been maintaining the programs and events out of their own resources and energy. A group from Children of The Americas came to meet them in October, 2005 just after they had moved from the park to the facilities at East Hills Church in El Cajon.
The connection between Dave and Becky and the children was obvious.
And here's what dinner looks like indoors. East Hills Church's support of JCR was critical with winter coming on and the time change making nightfall all too soon.
The "pizzghetti," spaghetti covered with melted cheese and pepperoni, goes down very well...
Always time to mug for the camera.
This shot says it all for me.
These boys and so many like them need all the protection and love we can muster to guide them through.
We never want that light in their eyes to go out.
This is YaYa. She stole our hearts.
After dinner in the courtyard, Becky holds court with the children, leading them through activities and prizes.
It was an enthusiastic group.
Here's Becky organizing something or other. Most likely it was handing out flyers for the "Clothes Closet" coming up in a couple of weeks where the children would be provided good, used clothing.
The Darling's personal computer that they used to make all flyers and other JCR material had gone down just the week before we arrived. So here's Tim Beck, who has been refurbishing computers for children in Mexico bringing a serviceable computer and monitor for the Darlings.
Latrelle Thomas cornered me and begged for me to take his picture. He didn't have to beg very hard. It's a good shot.
