All work and no play does not compute in a child's life. And so there's the Christmas Caravan. Every year, on the first Saturday after Christmas, rain or shine, the Caravan rumbles up the dusty streets of the colonias to deliver 2-3 tons of toys to often over 1,000 excited kids. Gathering toys from all over the U.S. and bringing the 100 or so volunteers who come with us on Caravan day is quite an adventure, but the children are the stars.
In anticipation of the Caravan's arrival, anywhere from 800 to over 1,000 children gather early in the morning at our dining rooms in the colonias and ejido and wait 4-5 hours for us to arrive. The kids are amazingly patient and orderly, and when we get there, the excitement ramps up. We immediately start passing out the dulces, sweets, as the children wait for the women of the neighborhoods to organize the toys and get ready to start bringing them in to select their treasures from the mountain of toys inside. It's an incredible time of connection with the children--and you can be a part of it all. |
