Genaro Vasquez School Dining Room: Making more space.
Genaro Vasquez school is situated in Colonia Tecolote and is the site of one of our 5 nutrition programs. We started with a cold breakfast program before classes, but realized the children really needed a space to eat and for hot breakfasts to be prepared.
Having poured the foundation some weeks before, it's framing day, as Jim Van Schaack and Norm Kremiller get organized.
First half of the first wall.
Second half going up. Several men from the neighborhoods as well as Ramon, the school's maintenance man, are on hand to help.
There is electricity and water in the colonias, so the power tools work.
Hats and knee pads.
Next wall down.
Next wall up.
Just like one of those flip books.
Still flipping...
Framed walls braced until...
Last piece goes in.
Norm through the looking glass.
And Norm and Jim in front of their walls.
Weeks later, the dining room is finished, painted and in service.
And today, the interior is completed as well, with a full kitchen with running water, sewage, gas cooktop, and refrigeration. Now over 100 kids can get a hot breakfast before class here, and the teachers have a place to work and meet between classes and perform other activities as well.
