Nutrition Centers
Children of The Americas maintains 5 nutrition centers or comedoras in the colonias and ejidos about 15 miles southwest of Tijuana, Mexico. Three of the centers are located in the neighborhoods of the colonias, and two are located in public schools. Children of The Americas has built two freestanding dining rooms with full plumbing/sewage, cooking appliances, and refrigeration at one neighborhood location and at Genaro Vasquez school. We've also helped build a third at Pedro de Gante school and completely remodeled and upgraded a second neighborhood location.

Besides building the necessary facilities, we provide all the food and cooking materials needed on an ongoing basis and support the women-mothers of the neighborhoods who operated the centers. We believe in letting the women manage the centers and make their own decisions on how best to care for the children. We supply what they lack in resources.

All the colonia nutrition centers serve a hot breakfast 6 days a week so the kids can go to school or class with a full belly in order to be able to concentrate. At the ejido, a much more remote location where there are no utilities whatsoever, we serve breakfast on Saturdays only. As additional resources become available, we hope to go full time there as well. All told, the nutrition centers serve over 500 kids a day. That's over 150,000 meals a year.
